Blue Energy Starts NRC Bid for Small Reactor at Texas Data-Center Plant

Published Sep 16, 2026

Summary:
  • Blue Energy Global Inc. has kicked off permitting to add a small nuclear unit at a Texas power project built to serve a Crusoe Inc. data center that starts on natural gas.
  • The company filed the initial piece of a construction permit with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and expects to submit the second part in the second half of 2027.
  • At the Port of Victoria site, located approximately 140 miles (225 kilometers) from Houston in a southwesterly direction, Blue Energy intends to put in gas turbines first, with a potential follow-on phase adding at most five small modular reactors.

What Blue Energy filed

Blue Energy said it submitted the first segment of a construction-permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It added that a follow-on filing is anticipated in the second half of 2027.

How the Port of Victoria project will work

The project is designed to power a Crusoe Inc. data center, starting with natural gas and layering in nuclear generation later. Blue Energy has said beginning with gas-fired units could get electricity flowing sooner than waiting solely on nuclear systems, which can require years for approvals and construction.

Technology and contracts involved

The company already has arrangements to deploy gas turbines from GE Vernova Inc., and it has selected a 300 megawatt design for a reactor supplied by GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy. Blue Energy is part of a growing set of firms eyeing nuclear for data centers, pursuing round-the-clock clean power even as these reactor designs remain unproven.

What this means for your portfolio

This is a real-world example of the power mix many data centers may lean on: near-term gas for speed, with nuclear added later for cleaner, steadier supply. If you track companies tied to data-center energy or to the named vendors, these are concrete plans, locations, and timelines now on the table.
