Haleon rides GLP-1 boom with higher U.S. sales of side-effect remedies

Summary:
  • Haleon says U.S. sales are climbing for its products used by people on GLP-1 weight-loss drugs.
  • A spokesperson said "dual placement in core aisles and GLP-1 destination sets delivers an average 24% sales lift per store," with that lift logged in Q1.
  • According to Gallup, approximately 11% of Americans are taking GLP-1 weight-loss therapies, while CVS says it is spotlighting OTC options to help manage side effects.

What Haleon reported

If you have seen those GLP-1 shelves at the pharmacy, Haleon wants its brands front and center. The London-listed consumer health company said it is seeing growing U.S. sales tied to products that help with side effects as GLP-1 use spreads. The drugs called out include Novo Nordisk's Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound and Foundayo, which aid weight loss by copying a hormone that signals fullness.

Why shoppers are buying

Popular as they are, GLP-1s can come with downsides. Reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation and diarrhea, and some users also report abdominal pain and stomach cramps. That is the demand Haleon is aiming to meet.

Products and retail strategy

Haleon - the company behind Advil pain relief as well as Biotène oral-care gels and TUMS indigestion tablets - said it is working with U.S. retailers including CVS Pharmacy to place its products both on regular aisles and in dedicated GLP-1 sections. "Dual placement in core aisles and GLP-1 destination sets delivers an average 24% sales lift per store," a Haleon spokesperson said, noting the increase was recorded in Q1. The spokesperson added, "Haleon holds the majority of GLP-1 shelf space at CVS," and said items grouped on those GLP-1 shelves are outperforming the same products in stores without a dedicated set.

Retail responses and what is next

CVS Pharmacy said it "has expanded its product assortment and is highlighting CVS brand and national brand over-the-counter products to help make managing side effects easier," without addressing Haleon's comments directly. Beyond CVS, Haleon said it has also discussed its GLP-1 in-store strategy with Walmart and Target, without sharing how those talks ended. Demand is sizable: Gallup reports that about 11% of Americans are taking GLP-1 weight-loss medications.
