ADIA Boosts Targets for Private Equity and Hedge Funds After Buyout Pickup

Published Sep 10, 2026

Summary:
  • Abu Dhabi Investment Authority lifted its private equity target to 15%-20% of the portfolio and its financial alternatives range to 7%-12% in its 2025 annual review.
  • The review said exit activity strengthened in 2025, with global exit volume exceeding $1 trillion, a mark last seen in 2021, and IPOs recording their best performance since the 2020-21 peak.
  • Long horizon results improved: a 30-year annualized return of 7.2% versus 7.1% in 2024, and a 20-year annualized return of 6.6% up from 6.3%.

What ADIA changed

ADIA, a roughly $1 trillion sovereign wealth investor, widened its target band for private equity to 15%-20% of the overall portfolio from 12%-17% a year ago. It also increased the allocation range for financial alternatives - an area in which it already ranks among the largest supporters of hedge funds - to 7%-12% from 5%-10%. Those updates appear in its 2025 annual review published Thursday.

Why ADIA is shifting allocations

The review flagged a clear rebound in deal exits in 2025, noting global exit value climbed above $1 trillion, a threshold last reached in 2021. It also said IPO activity was the strongest since the 2020-21 peak. Against that backdrop, ADIA trimmed its real estate allocation range to 2%-7% from 5%-10%, even as it kept the absolute exposure to property steady.

Performance and other moves

ADIA reported a 30-year annualized return of 7.2%, up from 7.1% in 2024, and a 20-year annualized return of 6.6%, up from 6.3%. Established in 1976 as Abu Dhabi's first wealth fund to prepare for life after oil, the fund's chair is Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is the brother of the UAE's president. The fund has grown its presence in private credit in recent years by seeding new platforms and supporting specialist managers, has put billions to work in India, and its global footprint has made it an increasingly influential dealmaker.

What this means for your portfolio

When a heavyweight allocator leans further into private equity and hedge funds after a better year for exits, it can shift where capital flows and how crowded certain strategies get. That can ripple into pricing and access across private markets that everyday investors watch from the sidelines.
