A central open book icon is surrounded by eight circular icons representing knowledge, ideas, documents, research, and global connectivity—signifying how investors seek guidance during economic uncertainty—all connected by arrows on a blue background.
Summary:
  • Apollo Sports Capital wants to be among private equity investors eligible to buy into an NFL franchise.
  • Over about a year, ASC has invested or pledged $13 billion and announced a deal for $2.6 billion to acquire an interest in the New York Yankees - a transaction that has since closed.
  • The NFL's two-year-old program lets approved firms buy up to 10% of a team and invest in as many as six clubs, and Apollo isn't on that approved list.

Why this is on the field now

Al Tylis, CEO of Apollo Sports Capital, put the NFL squarely on his shopping list. "We're interested in any great sports property anywhere in the world, which clearly includes the NFL," he said at Bloomberg Power Players New York. Two years ago, the NFL rolled out a private equity program that allows approved investors to acquire as much as a 10% stake and spread holdings across up to six teams.

Where ASC has been writing checks

Apollo Global Management created Apollo Sports Capital about a year ago, and Tylis said the group has "invested or committed to $13 billion of deals." Last month, the firm announced a $2.6 billion acquisition of an ownership interest in the New York Yankees, and Bloomberg reported it first. After completing the Yankees transaction, Tylis recalled team owner Hal Steinbrenner telling him, "welcome to the family." ASC has also invested in Atlético de Madrid and Wrexham AFC.

For Tylis, this isn't just another asset class to trade in and out of. This means something different."

The NFL's rules of engagement

Under the program the NFL started two years ago, a limited group of private equity firms can buy up to 10% of a franchise and hold positions across as many as six clubs. Apollo Sports Capital isn't currently on that list of approved investors, though it has been deploying billions across global sports and wants in.

What this could mean for your portfolio

If Apollo joins the approved ranks, more private capital could chase a small number of marquee franchises. That tends to support higher team valuations, which can flow into media rights, sponsorship pricing, and the leagues you watch every weekend.
