Apple released iOS 27 at the start of the week, ahead of the latest iPhones arriving in stores over the next few days. The update brings a reworked Siri AI assistant that Apple first showed in June, and the company noted that a version of its AI Siri announced in 2024 ended up getting delayed last year. The new assistant is labeled beta and requires an opt in through the Settings app, with a waitlist possible before you get access.
It's available in English now, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish slated for next month. Apple said the assistant won't launch initially in the EU or China due to regulatory issues.
Siri's upgrade centers on large language models that can sift through on-device personal information, such as texts, emails, and calendar entries. It can comb through messages to pull out things like addresses, recipes, and instructions, and it can handle general knowledge questions and web lookups. There's also a new Siri app that keeps a history of your prompts, and you can respond to Siri's responses, making the back and forth feel more natural than earlier versions.
Apple contrasted its strategy with frontier AI from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, saying it leans on its own smaller models that often run directly on phone and laptop processors. When requests get more complex, Apple routes them through Private Cloud Compute, which operates on Google Cloud infrastructure using Nvidia and Intel chips. Apple also said it is using Google's Gemini as part of building its models.
At Apple's iPhone launch event last week, CEO John Ternus summed up the pitch: "It's personal intelligence that's actually personal." He added, "iPhone sits at the center of an amazing ecosystem of intelligent features and experiences that work seamlessly across the products you use every day." Apple is positioning the upcoming iPhone 18 lineup as especially good at AI tasks thanks to fast chips and the trove of personal data already on the device, like calendars and messages.

Apple said some Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features that rely on its cloud servers will have daily usage limits. The company wrote, "Daily limits may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors," and added that expanded limits will "be available for a fee in the future."
