Big Financial Firms Back Kaiko With Expanded $110 Million Round

Summary:
  • On Monday, S&P Global led an add-on that, per the company, raised Kaiko's existing funding round to a total of $110 million.
  • Backers include DRW Holdings LLC, Susquehanna, Royal Bank of Canada, Nasdaq, BNP Paribas, Bpifrance, Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc., Canton Ventures, Coinbase Ventures and Stellar.
  • Paris-headquartered and founded in 2014, Kaiko plans to roll out additional products and services, has about 120 employees, and did not share its valuation.

Who invested and what changed

S&P Global anchored a new injection that takes Kaiko's current round to $110 million. The roster spans DRW Holdings LLC, Susquehanna, Royal Bank of Canada, Nasdaq, BNP Paribas, Bpifrance, Broadridge Financial Solutions Inc., Canton Ventures, Coinbase Ventures and Stellar. As Kim Trautmann, head of DRW Venture Capital, put it, "Always-on markets need always-on infrastructure." She added that as more assets move on chain, pricing, collateral and risk systems must operate in real time, with a stronger data layer tying it all together.

What Kaiko does and how it will use the money

Kaiko is among crypto's better known market data providers, supplying analytics and index benchmarks to financial institutions and digital-asset firms. CEO Ambre Soubiran said the fresh capital will go toward building new offerings, while declining to reveal the company's valuation. "Tokenization is becoming a reality, but if you want to embed tokenized assets into actual use cases you need the data," Soubiran said.

Why the timing matters

Wall Street is pushing ahead on putting a wide range of assets on blockchain rails - from stocks and bonds to funds - a shift known as tokenization. As a result, firms supplying market data are required to price, value, and oversee those assets 24/7 rather than only during trading sessions. In addition to putting in capital, Kaiko's latest investors are signing on to an industry consortium that intends to guide the development of the data and infrastructure necessary to move tokenized products into live use.

What this could mean for your money

Most legacy markets run on an opening bell and a close, with data feeds throttling back after hours. Crypto runs 24/7, and firms like Kaiko already capture and process prices continuously. The company recently bought US digital-asset data provider Amberdata and crypto infrastructure firm Cometh, and earlier this month teamed up with S&P Dow Jones Indices to roll their crypto benchmarks into the S&P Kaiko Digital Asset Indices. If more mainstream assets settle on always-on rails, the gap between traditional plumbing and real-time data will get more visible - and the players solving that gap could shape how you see prices when the bell is quiet.
