Brazil liquidates two asset managers tied to failed Banco Master

Summary:
  • Brazil's central bank liquidated two asset managers linked to failed Banco Master SA and Brazilian entrepreneur Nelson Tanure.
  • Regulators identified the firms as Trustee DTVM Ltda. and Banvox DTVM Ltda., saying both violated rules that govern the financial system.
  • Together they accounted for less than 1% of Brazil's asset-management business, the central bank said in a statement Thursday.

What changed

Brazil's monetary authority shut down two asset-management companies it says violated rules governing the financial system. In its Thursday statement, the central bank noted the pair are small in market footprint, representing under 1% of the country's asset-management industry.

The web of connections

Asset-management services connected Trustee and Banvox to Banco Master, and they also had ties to Nelson Tanure, a Brazilian investor known for buying into distressed companies. Bloomberg News reported in March that prosecutors earlier this year were examining a series of financial transactions that connected Tanure with Banco Master. He said he had no ties to the failed bank.

The money moves in question

Trustee served as the vehicle Tanure used to build positions in Alliança Saude SA and in Ambipar Participacoes e Empreendimentos SA, which operates in waste management and sought bankruptcy protection last year. Bloomberg News also reported in March that Tanure purchased bonds of Banvox Holding, a shareholder of Banvox DTVM, using investment vehicles. A request for comment to Tanure did not receive an immediate reply.

Why it matters for your wallet

Most people won't feel a direct impact given the firms' tiny share of the market. Still, the swift liquidation alongside the earlier probe is a reminder that when regulators pull threads, relationships among lenders, asset managers, and high-profile investors can come into view fast. Knowing who handles your money and how they are connected can help you make sense of headlines before they hit your account balance.
