Cheaper India Plan for Cursor Ahead of SpaceX Deal

Cheaper India Plan for Cursor Ahead of SpaceX Deal
Summary:
  • Cursor launched a ₹649 per month subscription for India, roughly one-third the cost of its standard $20 plan.
  • India is already Cursor's third-largest market, with more than 27 million developers on GitHub and over two million new ones expected in 2026.
  • SpaceX agreed to buy the AI coding startup for $60 billion in stock, with the deal projected to close in Q3 2026.

A Lower Price for a Big Market

India has a lot of developers. GitHub counts over 27 million users in India, ranking it second globally in developer population. And that number keeps growing - more than two million new developers joined GitHub from India just in 2026.

Cursor, the AI coding startup that helps programmers write software faster, noticed. The company already saw its user base in India triple over the past year. So it decided to do something it had never tried before: offer a country-specific price.

The big difference is that the India plan uses Cursor's own AI models, which are cheaper to run than the third-party models behind the pricier version.

Simon Green, head of Asia-Pacific and Japan for Cursor, said the move was about matching the price to the market. "We felt that we had an opportunity there to right-size the commercial model and drive scale," he said.

Other AI companies have done similar things. OpenAI and Anthropic both launched cheaper plans in India. But Cursor is the first to make India the exclusive test market for a localized subscription.

This decision fits a pattern seen across the AI sector, where OpenAI and Anthropic have similarly offered discounted India-specific plans to capture the country's rapidly growing developer base. By using its own proprietary models for the Starter plan, Cursor can offer a lower price without sacrificing margins, a strategy that may prove crucial as competition intensifies.

Cursor's decision to use its own AI models for the India plan is a key differentiator. While competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic have also introduced India-specific pricing, they depend on third-party models that are more costly to run. By owning its model stack, Cursor can offer a significantly lower price - ₹649 per month versus roughly $20 in the US - without eroding profit margins. This strategy aligns with the company's broader goal of scaling in India, where it has already tripled its user base in the past year.

What the SpaceX Deal Means

Cursor is not staying independent for long. Elon Musk's SpaceX agreed to buy the startup in an all-stock deal valued at $60 billion. SpaceX anticipates finalizing the purchase in Q3 2026.

The timing of the India push is not a coincidence. Green mentioned that the technical talent in India made it a natural fit for Cursor. And after the deal closes, SpaceX's existing Starlink operations in India could help Cursor grow faster by smoothing out business and regulatory hurdles.

The company has brought on its inaugural sales representative in India and is adding staff in several cities across the country. This indicates the company views India as a long-term opportunity rather than a temporary test.

The bottom line: If the India plan works, Cursor may offer similar local pricing in other countries. Green said it would be "crazy" to rule that out.
