China's Best-Selling Cars Are Now Mostly Electric as Market Shrinks

Published Aug 12, 2026

Summary:
  • Geely's Xingyuan electric hatchback was China's top-selling model in the six months ending July, with nearly 197,500 units sold at under 100,000 yuan ($14,820).
  • New-energy vehicles (battery-electric and hybrid) captured 65.1% of July's passenger-car sales, up from 54% a year earlier.
  • Overall passenger-car sales in China fell 20.3% in the seven months ending July, while new-energy vehicle sales dropped 12.5%.

The Top of the List Is Mostly Electric

China's car market has an electric look, and the numbers prove it. The country's best-selling model over the six-month period ending in July was Geely's Xingyuan, an electric hatchback with nearly 197,500 units sold, according to Autohome's top-10 model list.

Its price was just under 100,000 yuan, or about $14,820 in U.S. dollars. That makes the most popular car in China an affordable one, not a luxury statement.

Geely, a Hangzhou-based company, was second in 2025 sales across China, behind only BYD. It still sells gasoline cars, and it also offers premium electric cars under the Zeekr brand.

Tesla's Model Y electric SUV was the runner-up, selling more than 180,000 units. With a price between 263,500 and 313,500 yuan, it beat Li Auto's i6 SUV and Xiaomi's SU7 sedan.

Not bad for a foreign brand in a market stacked with local competitors.

BYD Sits Out the Top Three

BYD, the top brand overall, had a mixed run. The company placed three cars on the top-10 list for February through July, and none of them reached the top three.

The Yuan UP SUV came in fifth with nearly 97,700 units. The Ti 7, from BYD's off-road brand, was sixth, and the Sealion 06 SUV landed right behind it.

BYD's own passenger-car sales fell by double digits in the first half. For a brand that led China's market in 2025, that is a notable pause.

Volkswagen, the German carmaker, made the list with its compact, gasoline-powered Lavida. It ranked ninth, sitting between Leapmotor's A10 electric SUV and Geely's gasoline Boyue L SUV.

Count the brands and the picture gets sharper. Eight of the ten models belong to Chinese companies, Tesla has one, and Volkswagen is the only conventional foreign name on the list.

Electric Share Up, Sales Down

New-energy vehicles, the catch-all term for battery-electric and hybrid cars, accounted for 65.1% of July's new passenger-car sales. That is up from 54% in the same month a year earlier.

The China Passenger Car Association released the figures on Tuesday, Aug 11 2026. For the seven months ending in July, new-energy vehicle sales were down 12.5%, while the overall market fell 20.3%.

Read together, the numbers show electric cars taking a bigger slice of a smaller pie. Their sales are falling too, but not as fast as the market around them.

What It Means for Investors

For anyone watching auto stocks, China's market is now electric, crowded, and shrinking all at once.

That points to a fight for market share, not a rising tide.

The winners so far are the brands with the right car at the right price.
