Emirates pushes for direct Berlin flights as UAE maps out big Germany investment plan

Published Sep 10, 2026

Summary:
  • Emirates is still pursuing direct access to Berlin after being held back by Germany's national restrictions.
  • Minister of Foreign Trade Thani Al Zeyoudi said the Berlin link "has been already somehow agreed between both sides," adding, "We're just finalizing the touches, hopefully before the end of the year."
  • On Thursday, the UAE announced an intention to put €40 billion ($46.5 billion) into Europe's largest economy; for the time being, Emirates can only serve Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf and Hamburg.

Where things stand

Emirates has chased a Berlin route for years, but existing German rules have blocked it. Speaking in Berlin on Thursday during an interview, Thani Al Zeyoudi said the two sides have effectively reached an understanding and are aiming to seal it before year-end. The airline's president, Tim Clark, has argued that a further slot would stimulate visitor numbers and commercial activity in Berlin and the wider region. At present, the carrier's Germany footprint is capped at Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf and Hamburg.

The competitive picture

Deutsche Lufthansa AG is resisting the move, fearing more long-distance travelers would pick Emirates when connecting to Asia and Australia. Berlin does have some long-haul options already: Qatar Airways flies to Doha, and Eurowings and Condor now run several Berlin to Dubai services. Still, the airport is considered under-used for long-haul routes and has seen traffic decline in recent years.

Why it matters for your travel options

Al Zeyoudi's Berlin visit was part of a UAE delegation that on Thursday announced plans to invest €40 billion in Germany. If Emirates secures the green light, Berlin could add a fresh long-haul link and support business and tourism.
