Summary:
  • French investigators, with assistance from Belgian officials, seized over €65 million on Aug. 19 in a tax investigation involving McKinsey & Co.
  • The amount equals $75.5 million and represents 96% of France's estimated tax shortfall in the case.
  • The probe stems from questions over whether McKinsey paid corporate taxes in the past decade despite earning millions on government work.

What happened

French investigators, helped by counterparts in Belgium, confiscated more than €65 million on Aug. 19 tied to an ongoing tax case involving McKinsey & Co. A joint statement from France's financial prosecutor and his Belgian counterpart said the sum equates to $75.5 million and covers 96% of what France estimates it is owed.

How the case got here

Representatives for McKinsey did not provide an immediate comment when asked.

Where the probe stands

In a Friday statement, the Parquet National Financier said that investigators began interviewing both witnesses and suspects last year before seeking assistance from Belgian authorities. The investigation remains active, the PNF added.

What this means for your portfolio

This is not a verdict, but it is a real move with money attached and a sign the case is progressing. If you own consulting or government-contract heavy names, it is a reminder that tax and legal overhangs can linger and resurface. The next updates to watch: any changes to the estimated tax loss, further cooperation steps with Belgium, and whether McKinsey ultimately faces new claims or clears them.
