Golden Dome Missile Shield Passes First Big Test, Heads to Space

Published Aug 11, 2026

Summary:
  • All 12 companies working on the $185 billion Golden Dome shield passed early tests and will move to space-based trials.
  • The Space Force handed out the contracts in April, with $3.2 billion set aside for now and tens of billions possible later.
  • The next milestones are two space flight tests and an intercept demonstration.

The First Hurdle Is Behind Them

The Pentagon's plan to shoot down missiles from space just cleared its first hurdle. All 12 companies working on the $185 billion Golden Dome shield passed their initial tests, and the Space Force says they are moving to the next phase.

Michael Guetlein, the Space Force general leading the program, said at a Tuesday conference that every company will now have to prove its technology actually works in space. Some of the early tests involved passing sensor data to an interceptor, which is the piece that would actually destroy an incoming missile, and checking out the spacecraft's propulsion, the system that moves it.

The Space Force handed out contracts in April to 12 companies, including RTX, Anduril, and Lockheed Martin, to build weaponized satellites designed to shoot down ballistic missiles, the long-range rockets that carry warheads. The administration has committed $3.2 billion to date, and subsequent contracts could be worth tens of billions more.

What the Next Phase Looks Like

The Pentagon set this up like a prize competition rather than a traditional contract. Teams earn funding by hitting milestones: a ground test, two space flight tests, and an intercept demonstration.

A ground test happens on Earth, where you can control the conditions. Space is a much less forgiving place to prove a new weapon.

What comes next is a much harder ask. Each company has to get its technology working in space, then prove it can actually intercept a ballistic missile in flight.

The final test is an intercept demonstration, which means actually shooting down a missile from space. The idea is to catch a missile early, before it reaches its target.

That means putting weapons in orbit, which is one of the hardest problems in military engineering. It is also what makes this program different from anything the U.S. has tried recently.

The Last Big Space Missile Plan Didn't Make It

This is not the first time the U.S. has tried this. The program is one of the most ambitious space-based missile defense efforts since Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative, a Cold War plan that the U.S. eventually dropped after costs climbed, the technology could not deliver, and support in Washington faded.

The Golden Dome is taking a staged approach, which is designed to keep costs in check and prove the tech before anyone writes a giant check.

But the technical challenge is still enormous. Building a satellite that can find, track, and hit a moving missile from orbit is a completely different game from launching a communications satellite.

What It Means for Your Portfolio

For investors, the interesting part is not the satellites. It is the payment structure.

The Pentagon pays the teams in stages, not all at once. That makes it easier to see which projects are on track, because the money trail shows who is delivering and who is falling behind.

The program is still early, and a lot can change before any of this becomes a working shield.

If the program keeps moving, the big contracts that come after are where the serious money lands. If it stumbles, like Reagan's version did, the budget could shrink just as fast.

Either way, the next two space flight tests will tell you a lot about which companies are actually building working hardware. If you own a defense stock or a broad index fund, this is the kind of program that can show up in earnings a few years down the road, and that is the part that matters for your portfolio.
