Jump Trading to Add 11,000 Square Feet in Hong Kong's One International Finance Centre

Summary:
  • Jump Trading plans to take an extra 11,000 square feet (1,022 square meters) at One International Finance Centre, according to people familiar with the plans.
  • The firm will expand onto a new floor and increase space on its current floor as it steps up activity in Hong Kong's equity capital markets.
  • Options open interest in Hong Kong was up by over one third versus last year's full-year total by Sept. 4, with ETF turnover also rising.

What's new

Jump Trading is set to grow its Hong Kong footprint at One International Finance Centre by 11,000 square feet, people with knowledge of the move said, adding that the firm will both take a new floor and enlarge its existing one. Citing the confidentiality of the plans, the people requested anonymity. Jump Trading's spokesperson would not comment.

The expansion dovetails with Jump's bigger focus on Hong Kong's equity capital markets, after a prolonged stretch of IPO activity created rich opportunities for trading firms. One of the people said the firm also intends to add Hong Kong hires in quant and AI positions.

The broader backdrop

Prop trading firms and large, globally focused hedge funds have been a big force in reviving Hong Kong's top tier office market after a glut had earlier driven vacancies up and rents down.

Recent signposts:

  • Last year, Jane Street Group agreed to take six floors at Central Yards, a waterfront project being built in Central, a deal billed as the area's largest office lease in decades.
  • Qube Research & Technologies followed with a deal in Two International Finance Centre.
  • Point72 also expanded in Henderson Tower.

These moves are arriving alongside heavier trading and more equity capital markets activity. For Hong Kong-listed options, both contract volume and open interest hit new highs in every one of the past three years, according to the exchange operator. As of Sept. 4, open interest was already more than one third above the entire tally for 2023. ETF trading has climbed too, bolstering another arena where Jump and its rivals are active.

Where Jump is playing

Although allocations tied to Hong Kong IPOs and block trades usually aren't disclosed, Jump Trading did appear publicly as one of the cornerstone investors in Victory Giant Technology Huizhou Co.'s Hong Kong listing. The shares jumped 50% on their first trading day.

Why it matters to you

Bigger leases, more hiring, and record options activity all point to livelier markets in Hong Kong. That can translate into tighter spreads, more liquidity, and faster-moving prices around IPOs and ETFs. If your portfolio touches Asia or relies on trading depth and price discovery, a busier Hong Kong can shape how quickly you get in or out and what you pay along the way.
