Kropz pares back Elandsfontein, shifts to nanophos as market pain bites

Published Sep 14, 2026

Summary:
  • Kropz Plc will cut some of its staff and plans not to extend the operating-and-maintenance contract with Elandsfontein contractors when it comes up for renewal in November.
  • The mine, located around 70 miles from Cape Town to the northwest, employs about 540 people including contractors.
  • Contractor Trollope Mining Group told workers its deal might not be extended, putting 238 jobs at risk.

The move and where it applies

Kropz Plc, the phosphate outfit backed by billionaire Patrice Motsepe, said on Sept. 7 it would restructure the Elandsfontein operation after pouring $160 million into the project, with the war in the Middle East worsening already weak market conditions. The mine sits roughly 70 miles northwest of Cape Town and has a workforce of about 540 when contractors are included.

What the restructuring involves

Kropz plans to reduce its own staff and will let its operating and maintenance arrangement with contractors expire in November rather than extend it. Separately, Trollope Mining Group notified employees that its contract might not be renewed and that as many as 238 roles could be affected.

Strategy, context, and comment

The company is pivoting toward producing nanophos for the South African market - an alternative soft rock that delivers phosphate at a slower pace - and will run down its existing phosphate rock inventory. Chief Operating Officer Mark Maynard said, "Kropz will continue maintaining the majority of the unused plant in a care and maintenance state that will ensure a quick return to phosrock production when market conditions become more favorable."

What this means for your portfolio

Zooming out, Motsepe first backed Kropz in 2018 and, via African Rainbow Capital, took near-total control after a series of bailouts. The Elandsfontein mine has struggled to meet production targets and drew criticism over attempts to operate inside a national park. If you have exposure to Kropz or fertilizer markets, this reset signals a near-term focus on cash preservation and local sales while keeping the plant ready for a faster restart if prices improve.
