Malaysia Says DBS Lawsuit Is Also About Restoring Credibility

Published Sep 13, 2026

Summary:
  • Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as finance minister, said Sunday the case is about more than money.
  • Liquidators for four 1MDB-linked firms filed a roughly $1 billion claim against DBS in Singapore's High Court.
  • Malaysia reports 51.4 billion ringgit in total 1MDB-related obligations and 31.3 billion ringgit recovered to date.

What Anwar Said

Anwar Ibrahim framed the latest recovery push as a test of Malaysia's reputation, not just its balance sheet. "This recovery effort is not merely about reclaiming lost funds," he said, adding that trust, institutional confidence, and the country's standing with global partners were damaged during what he called a dark chapter in national history.

The Lawsuit and DBS Response

Liquidators acting for four companies tied to 1Malaysia Development Bhd. have sued DBS Group Holdings in Singapore's High Court, seeking around $1 billion in damages. DBS, which is Singapore's largest bank, said it "categorically rejects and will vigorously resist" the claim. The 1MDB scandal continues to loom large, long past the period when billions were said to have been drained from the fund.

Where the 1MDB Math Stands

Malaysia pegs its total financial obligation linked to 1MDB at 51.4 billion ringgit, or $12.6 billion, and says asset recoveries have reached 31.3 billion ringgit so far. The government also noted that JPMorgan Chase & Co. agreed last year to a 1.4 billion ringgit settlement. For everyday investors, the message is simple enough: reputational risks can stick to institutions for years, and that lingering overhang can matter as much as the headline numbers.
