Microsoft will start breaking out Azure sales each quarter and overhauling how it reports results

Published Sep 2, 2026

Summary:
  • Microsoft will finally spell out Azure revenue every quarter after years of sharing only growth percentages.
  • A Wednesday filing laid out two years of quarterly Azure sales, rising to $29.4 billion in the period that ended June 30, 2026.
  • Microsoft is merging Intelligent Cloud and Productivity and Business Processes into Agents and Infra, and renaming More Personal Computing to Devices and Consumer, with the new structure debuting this fall.

Why this is happening now

After catching heat from investors for keeping Azure's dollar figures under wraps, Microsoft said it will start listing sales for its cloud unit each quarter. As investor relations chief Jonathan Neilson put it, "it feels like the right moment to bring the extra level of transparency." The company has long published only Azure's growth rate, which left analysts guessing about the size of a business that has become a proxy for Microsoft's artificial intelligence ambitions. Former CEO and major shareholder Steve Ballmer was pushing for this clarity back in 2015, calling it "sort of a key metric" and adding, "If they talk about it as key to the company, they should report it."

The figures under the hood

A midweek filing listed two years of Azure quarterly revenue, culminating in $29.4 billion for the latest quarter that closed on June 30, 2026. The company added that Azure exceeded $100 billion in revenue in the fiscal year ending in June, compared with $75 billion the prior year, representing about 30% of overall sales. Microsoft noted it has, on occasion, shared Azure revenue in the past.

What Microsoft will report going forward

This disclosure shift lands alongside Microsoft's first major revamp of its primary reporting lines since 2015. The existing Intelligent Cloud bucket, which includes Azure and server products, and the Productivity and Business Processes group, home to Microsoft 365 and the former Office suite, will be combined into a single segment named Agents and Infra. Microsoft will rename the More Personal Computing unit to Devices and Consumer; this segment covers Windows, search advertising, and Xbox. Microsoft is also shuffling other items, including moving much of LinkedIn's growth into the same grouping as Bing and other advertising-driven operations.

Timing and the AI through-line

Microsoft plans to roll out the new segment structure when it reports results covering the opening quarter of its fiscal year later this fall. Framing the shake-up, CEO Satya Nadella wrote, "The development of artificial intelligence is changing what we build and how we operate, and it is blurring the boundaries between our products and reshaping our business models." For your wallet, the takeaway is simple: more granular cloud numbers and a cleaner segment map make it easier to see where Microsoft's growth is actually coming from, especially as AI spending becomes a bigger driver of the story.
