OpenAI on Monday reported its advertising arm has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, which it presented as evidence of a "diversified business model." The company is gearing up for a massive initial public offering and faces pressure to back up its $852 billion valuation with sustained growth.
Roughly 200 days in, the ads unit builds atop existing revenue streams such as enterprise products, consumer subscriptions, and usage-based APIs. In February, the company began piloting ads within ChatGPT for users in the U.S., a rollout described as both highly anticipated and controversial. Digital ads have long powered profits at giants like Google and Meta, and rival Anthropic mocked OpenAI's shift by making it the centerpiece of its first Super Bowl campaign.

ChatGPT Ads now reach 40+ countries, and on Monday OpenAI started opening self-serve buying to India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Ads appear for Go subscribers and for people using the free tier, a group that represents the vast majority of ChatGPT's 1 billion weekly active users. OpenAI says promotions are clearly marked, do not alter ChatGPT's responses, and do not grant advertisers access to private conversations.
"Our next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities," OpenAI said in a release. "We will also explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT."
