Philippines Suspends Fresh Ube Exports Indefinitely

Published Sep 13, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • The Philippines stopped exporting fresh purple yam (ube) in mid-August with no set end date, and the halt also includes propagative stock.
  • According to the Agriculture Department, the pause aims to expand domestic production and position ube as a larger export earner.
  • Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said, "We severely lack planting material ourselves, and we don't want to export it to countries that could use Philippine ube varieties to compete with us."

What happened

On Sunday, the Department of Agriculture confirmed that the Philippines has indefinitely paused exports of fresh ube. The suspension began in mid-August and extends beyond the edible tubers to include materials used for propagation.

Why the pause

Officials framed the move as a capacity play: protect scarce planting stocks now to scale up production at home and build a stronger export engine later. As Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. put it, "We severely lack planting material ourselves, and we don't want to export it to countries that could use Philippine ube varieties to compete with us." Global interest is rising among processors and overseas buyers, but the planting materials needed to expand output remain limited.

Where ube goes and how it is used

Ube keeps showing up in more places, and not just on dessert menus. It is turned into powder, jam and paste, then folded into everything from cheesecake to candles. Shipments have already reached Canada, the Middle East and parts of Asia, and, per the Agriculture Department, the US and Europe may follow.

What this means for your portfolio

Short term, this policy is about safeguarding limited planting stocks and building the capacity to export more ube over time. If you follow companies that work with ube flavors or ingredients, keep an eye on how the pause and future production plans shape availability and pricing as demand grows.
