Prediction Markets See Modest Hiring Bounce After July Job Loss

Published Sep 1, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • July payrolls showed the U.S. economy lost jobs.
  • Kalshi puts 50-50 odds on August adding more than 50,000 jobs, a touch softer than the Dow Jones consensus of 53,000.
  • Polymarket pegs a 48% chance of topping 50,000, while Kalshi assigns roughly 1-in-4 odds to both an August job loss and to more than 80,000 jobs added.

Traders expect a rebound but not a blowout

After July's surprise drop in payrolls, bettors on prediction platforms are leaning toward a return to job growth in August, but not a barnburner. On Kalshi, pricing implies an even 50% chance that payrolls cleared 50,000 last month. Over on Polymarket, traders put that same threshold at a 48% likelihood.

Markets versus economists

That Kalshi read sits just shy of the Dow Jones call for 53,000 new jobs in August, hinting at a slightly cooler take from the crowd. And both the crowd and forecasters have stumbled lately. For two straight months they overshot: they were looking for six-figure gains in June - the actual number landed just under 60,000 - and they anticipated growth in July, which ultimately posted a decline.

What comes next and what to watch

Kalshi's contracts are simple yes/no wagers on whether the U.S. added more than a set job count, and they settle on official Bureau of Labor Statistics figures. Given recent misses, traders there are hedging for a wide range: about a 1-in-4 chance the economy actually lost jobs in August, and a similar probability that it topped 80,000. The August employment report hits at 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday.

Bottom line for your wallet: a surprise in either direction can ripple through rates, stocks and paychecks. If you're watching the noise, focus on how a hotter or cooler print might nudge borrowing costs and job security in your own world, not just the tickers.
