Qiagen Picks Former Filtration Group Leader as New CEO

Published Aug 24, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • Jonathan Pratt will become Qiagen's CEO on Sept. 1, succeeding Thierry Bernard.
  • EQT and KKR are among potential buyers that have been granted access to Qiagen's financial data.
  • Qiagen shares trade near $44, but suitors have floated bids of at least $50 per share.

A New Leader During a Critical Moment

Pratt, a former CEO of Filtration Group, takes over from Thierry Bernard.

The timing is no accident. That is a clear signal that a sale is on the table, not just a rumor.

Potential Deal Terms

Private equity firms EQT and KKR & Co. are among the names exploring possible offers for the company. These discussions remain in progress, and there is no guarantee that any interested party will ultimately submit a formal bid. However, the interest is genuine and has been building for some time.

That would represent a substantial premium compared to where the stock currently trades. Qiagen's stock has fallen 7.6% so far this year, trading at roughly $44 in New York, placing the company's market capitalization at around $9 billion.

What This Means for Investors

For shareholders, the crucial consideration is whether an acquisition will actually materialize and what price might be offered. Qiagen stated in its Monday announcement that its board remains committed to evaluating strategic alternatives with its financial advisers. Back in March, Bernard indicated that Qiagen had engaged Moelis & Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. to conduct a strategic review.

Qiagen's leadership decision is being made while that review continues, and a new CEO would remain in place regardless of whether a buyer emerges. The same Monday announcement kept the door open to continuing as an independent company.

Regardless of the outcome, the incoming CEO inherits a business that supplies tools and services for genetic testing to clients spanning pharmaceutical research teams and clinical laboratories. A successful acquisition would represent one of Europe's largest healthcare transactions this year and would finally close the chapter on a long-running takeover saga.

Background and Context

Qiagen specializes in technologies and services for analyzing genetic material, serving customers that include pharmaceutical research and development groups as well as clinical diagnostic labs.

The company has been the subject of takeover rumors for several years, with various potential buyers expressing interest at different times. An EQT representative declined to comment, while a KKR spokesperson wasn't immediately available to comment.

Qiagen's board has consistently said it would consider all options, including maintaining an independent position, but the decision to give data-sore access to potential buyers suggests the process has moved beyond the early stage.

The leadership transition comes at a pivotal time for the company. Jonathan Pratt brings operational experience from a previous role at Filtration Group, where he oversaw business development and strategic efforts. His appointment suggests Qiagen's board is preparing for a range of possible outcomes.

For now, investors will be watching whether an interested private equity firm makes a formal bid for the company's stock. If no deal is reached, the long-running speculation may continue, with Pratt working as CEO of an independent Qiagen.
