Record Cash Chases India's Small Caps While Blue Chips Slide

Published Sep 10, 2026

Summary:
  • Small-cap mutual funds attracted 79.7 billion rupees ($837 million) in August, a new peak.
  • Equity funds overall saw 293.3 billion rupees in August inflows, buoyed by monthly recurring investment plans.
  • Foreign investors have yanked nearly $25 billion from Indian stocks this year, even as locals keep buying through funds.

Big inflows into small caps

Money kept piling into India's smallest listed companies in August. Small-cap funds pulled in 79.7 billion rupees, the most on record, per the Association of Mutual Funds in India. It was not a blip either.

The category has been notching fresh records in successive months as investors hunt for growth away from the big indexes. Broad equity funds also had a strong month at 293.3 billion rupees, helped by steady monthly contributions that keep cash flowing even when headlines get noisy.

Market split: small caps up, benchmark down

Earnings momentum and that steady gush of money have pushed the NSE Nifty Smallcap 250 Index higher for six months in a row. The picture is very different at the top end of the market. Year-to-date, the NSE Nifty 50 Index has fallen by over 10%, weighed down by higher energy costs, a softer rupee, and rising global yields, even as corporate earnings start to rebound.

What this means for your portfolio

The wedge between small caps and the benchmark shows who is setting the tone: domestic investors. Local savers are still routing money into equities through mutual funds, while foreign investors remain sellers and have pulled nearly $25 billion this year, marking the largest yearly outflow on record. If you own India funds, the recent winners have been smaller names with earnings support and strong local demand.
