Roger Goodell Agrees to Four-Year Extension Through 2030 Season

Published Sep 7, 2026

Summary:
  • A four-year deal keeping NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in the job through the 2030 season, concluding on March 31, 2031, has been finalized.
  • The NFL's Compensation Committee informed all club owners of the agreement on Sunday.
  • Chair Robert Kraft said the deal is overwhelmingly performance-based, with more than 95% of total pay tied to results.

What the agreement is

Roger Goodell, 67, has agreed to a contract extension that keeps him as commissioner through the 2030 league season, with the term concluding on March 31, 2031. The league's Compensation Committee notified the full ownership group of the agreement on Sunday.

How the committee described it

In a memo to owners obtained by The Associated Press, Compensation Committee chairman and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft wrote, "We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years." He also noted that the committee worked with an independent compensation consultant and outside counsel to craft a package aligned with the NFL's long-term goals. Kraft said the package ties more than 95% of pay to performance metrics, leaving compensation largely contingent on how Goodell and the league fare under standards set by the committee.

Money, disclosures, and track record

Financial specifics for the new deal were not immediately available. For the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, reports pegged Goodell's pay at $63.9 million. Because the NFL office no longer operates as a tax‑exempt trade association, the league isn't required to publish the commissioner's annual compensation.

This marks his fifth extension since he succeeded Paul Tagliabue in 2006. Goodell started his NFL career in 1982 as an administrative intern under then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle.

Why it matters beyond the commissioner's office

Under Goodell's watch, the NFL's popularity and revenue have surged. In 2023, the Washington Commanders changed owners for $6.05 billion, and during this offseason the Seattle Seahawks were purchased for $9.612 billion, a record-setting sum. Goodell's new term ends as the current collective bargaining agreement expires in March 2031, setting up continuity at the top as the NFL navigates media deals, global growth, and labor timelines that influence the money flowing through every corner of the sport, from teams to vendors to local economies.
