SpaceX Set To Take Bigger Slice Of Nasdaq 100

Published Sep 13, 2026

Summary:
  • Preliminary index figures shared late Friday indicate SpaceX's weight could climb to about 2.82% from roughly 1.28%, with the final number set later this month.
  • SpaceX entered the Nasdaq 100 in July with a smaller stake because most shares were locked up; as those restrictions lift, free float rises and its index weight can increase again.
  • Wall Street is bracing for billions of dollars of buying by index funds and ETFs that mirror the benchmark.

What changed this month

Fresh pro forma figures distributed via Nasdaq's Global Index Watch late Friday suggest SpaceX's slice of the Nasdaq 100 may jump to around 2.82% from about 1.28%. The precise weighting will be finalized later this month. SpaceX joined the index in July, but because lockups kept most shares off the market, its starting weight stayed low, despite Nasdaq revising its rules to allow quicker entry for newly listed large caps and to eliminate the old 10% free-float threshold.

Why more shares are now counted

As lockups expire, more SpaceX stock becomes tradable. That expands the company's free float, which can lift its representation in the index. There could be more rejiggering ahead, too: additional tranches are scheduled to come off lockup, potentially nudging SpaceX's weighting higher again.

What happened after earlier lockup expiries

The first lockup expiration hit in August alongside SpaceX's debut earnings report as a public company, and there were worries newly tradable shares would flood the market. That didn't pan out. One week later, another lockup came off with much the same result: insiders mostly stayed put, and the shares remained resilient.

What it means for index funds and your portfolio

Think of the Nasdaq 100 as a basket of the biggest non-financial names listed on Nasdaq. There's no minimum market cap to get in, but companies need to trade at least 200,000 shares a day on average and clear other requirements. When a member's weight shifts, passive funds that track the index have to rebalance.

Big index changes remind investors that steady planning protects long term financial goals. The largest tracker, Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1 (QQQ), sits at $481 billion, and Nasdaq says roughly $1.7 trillion followed the Nasdaq 100 at the end of Q2. If SpaceX's weight lands higher, expect mechanical buying to kick in. If you own funds pegged to the Nasdaq 100, these tweaks can subtly sway returns without you making any moves.
