SpaceX Shares Stabilize as Traders Weigh Options Bets

Published Aug 27, 2026
Share:
Summary:
  • SpaceX's stock price has remained unusually steady near $140, fluctuating within only a $10 range for three consecutive weeks.
  • Implied volatility in options has dropped sharply from over 120 before earnings to just 57, signaling reduced expectations for large price swings.
  • The most actively traded call option requires only a modest 3.5% gain by Friday, while the overall put/call ratio shows slightly more bearish bets at 1.1.

The Calm After the Storm

SpaceX stock is exhibiting an unprecedented level of composure compared to its historically volatile behavior. Earlier this year, the shares were prone to dramatic swings, but they've now settled into a narrow $10 range around $140 for nearly a month.

The options market underscores this transformation. Prior to earnings, implied volatility - a measure of expected price turbulence - soared above 120. Today, that figure has plunged to 57, placing SpaceX below even traditionally stable tech stocks.

"It's like the wild man raised by wolves finally moved to the city," says Convex Asset Management's Noel Smith. "SpaceX now lives in the city."

Why Traders Are Watching Closely

Thursday's trading session saw heightened activity, with half a million options contracts exchanged. Notably, traders initiated 168,000 new call positions, betting on a rise in the stock, compared to only 75,000 new puts. The standout contract was a call option targeting just a 3.5% upward move by week's end, suggesting cautious optimism among speculators.

Despite the flurry of bullish activity, the broader market sentiment remains tempered. The put/call ratio of 1.1 indicates a slight preference for bearish bets overall. Options expiring September 25 price in an 11% move - equivalent to $16 in either direction - which, while significant, pales in comparison to SpaceX's earlier volatility.

Background: From Chaos to Calm

SpaceX's newfound stability follows a period of intense speculation driven by its ambitious projects and mixed financial disclosures. Earlier this year, the stock reacted sharply to every rumor about its Starlink revenue or Starship test launches. However, recent announcements - including clearer timelines for profitability and contract wins - have provided investors with enough certainty to reduce wild price swings. This shift has also made options cheaper, presenting both opportunities and risks for retail traders.

The Bottom Line

For retail investors, SpaceX's calmer trading patterns offer a double-edged sword. Lower volatility means fewer heart-stopping price drops, but it also diminishes the potential for explosive gains that once drew traders to the stock. As Smith notes, "Just because it's the cheapest it's ever been relative to itself doesn't mean much." The current options activity suggests the market has largely accepted $140 as a temporary equilibrium - until the next major catalyst arrives.
