Switzerland revamps military command to refocus on home defense

Published Sep 9, 2026

Summary:
  • Bern backed a new command setup that shifts the armed forces toward defending Switzerland and away from a training-and-peacekeeping posture.
  • The army and air force would answer directly to army chief Benedikt Roos, with the plan still requiring parliamentary approval.
  • Switzerland, neutral and outside both NATO and the EU, will vote later this month on writing its non-alignment into the constitution.

What Changed

In a Wednesday statement, the government endorsed a revamped command structure designed to turn the military from a largely training-oriented force with peacekeeping duties into an operational force centered on protecting the country. Under the plan, both the army and the air force would report straight to army chief Benedikt Roos. The idea is to streamline decision making so the services can handle anything from supporting civil authorities to responding to a full-scale attack. Lawmakers still have to sign off.

Why The Shift

Swiss officials are tightening their security policy as the backdrop worsens, citing Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and a weaker US defense commitment toward Europe. The government also wants stronger safeguards against espionage and sabotage. Later this month, voters will decide whether to cement the country's long-standing non-alignment by adding it to the constitution.

Upgrades And Funding

Although Switzerland has long allocated considerably less to defense than many of its European counterparts, this year it launched a sales tax increase to fund a military overhaul. On the shopping list: standing up a drone battalion, buying F-35 fighter jets, and adding new air defense systems.

What It Means For Your Portfolio

Neutral Switzerland, which does not belong to NATO or the EU, is trying to raise its defensive game while keeping its traditional stance. A nationwide vote later this month will decide whether that non-alignment becomes part of the country's constitution. For investors, it is another sign that even historically cautious countries are directing more resources toward security, with knock-on effects for aerospace, defense tech, and public finances.
