Trump Defends Launching the Iran War, Says He'd Do It Again

Summary:
  • President Donald Trump said he does not regret initiating the Iran war, adding, "If I had it to do again, I would do exactly what I did."
  • A Wall Street Journal report said top White House advisers discussed with Trump that the war could stretch beyond his current term, and markets are bracing for a longer conflict.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions against "a large bank" are coming Monday and noted that the administration shut down and imposed sanctions on the Dubai offices of Egypt's second largest bank as well as on a "30th-largest Turkish bank."

What Trump told interviewers

Trump told Fox News' Laura Ingraham he would have moved against Iran even if it hurt him in the midterms.

In another interview on Thursday with NewsNation, Trump dismissed reports of damaged U.S. assets after Iran alleged it had hit several U.S. fighter jets stationed at a base in Jordan. "No damage. No nothing," he replied when pressed on whether there was any truth to the claims.

Markets and internal White House discussions

Investors are bracing for a longer timeline after a Wall Street Journal report said senior advisers discussed with Trump that the conflict could carry on past his current term. Even so, Trump has for months argued the war will end soon. He has asserted it will wrap up right after the midterm elections and that oil and gas prices would drop as well.

Bessent said the administration had shuttered and sanctioned the Dubai locations of Egypt's second largest bank, alleging the bank provided Iran $1.8 billion. He also stated that a "30th-largest Turkish bank" was sanctioned for providing funds to the Iranians, though he did not name it. Last week, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Turkey-based Golden Global Yatirim Bankasi Anonim Sirketi, known as Golden Global Bank, along with its subsidiaries.
