Trump Waves Off AI Doomsday Fears as Safety Alarms Grow Louder

Published Sep 11, 2026

Summary:
  • Asked Thursday about AI causing human extinction, U.S. President Donald Trump said, "No, I don't have any," and stressed the need for the U.S. to win AI.
  • Researchers at OpenAI and Anthropic are warning about risks; on Tuesday, Anthropic's Jacob Coxon announced he was leaving the company, contending that labs are "gambling with our lives."
  • Lawmakers are pushing oversight, including the FRONTIER Act announced in July and the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act introduced earlier this month.

What Trump said and where he's focused

Why insiders are sounding the alarm

Trump's comments landed after a run of public warnings from researchers at frontier labs. On Tuesday, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon announced his departure from the company and argued that Anthropic and OpenAI are "gambling with our lives." He added that people building AI think it could "kill us all by the end of the decade," a sentiment that others at these labs have repeated. A key fear is models learning to enhance themselves - recursive self-improvement, or RSI.

Signals coming from OpenAI

Inside OpenAI, Jasmine Wang, an alignment researcher, cautioned Wednesday evening, "It's hard to overstate how dangerous speeding towards RSI is." On Saturday, OpenAI's chief scientist Jakub Pachocki said he has a "strong expectation" that the current pace of progress could continue into recursive self-improvement and warned, "I am concerned no one is prepared for the consequences of a continued rapid rise in machine intelligence."

The policy drumbeat and why it matters to you

On Capitol Hill, Democrats and some Republicans are pushing for stricter oversight of advanced AI systems. "Safety researchers are resigning, powerful AI models are breaking out of their labs, and companies are racing ahead anyway," Trahan wrote on X on Wednesday. "It's past time for Congress to get off the sidelines and do its job." Earlier this month, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Rep. Greg Casar, D-Texas, introduced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act to temporarily pause advanced AI development until federal safety rules are established.
