UniCredit weighs building custody and brokerage for digital assets

Published Sep 11, 2026

Summary:
  • UniCredit SpA is exploring a bigger digital-asset push, including picking a tech partner to support custody and trading infrastructure.
  • Options being studied range from tokenized investments and fixed income to client stablecoin use and channels for crypto exposure, with talks still early and no final go-ahead.
  • Among its latest actions: providing its professional clients with a structured investment linked to BlackRock Inc.'s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF, completing Italy's first tokenized minibond, joining the Qivalis stablecoin venture, and purchasing a minority interest in VC Trade.

What UniCredit is actually doing

UniCredit SpA is mapping out an expansion into digital assets, with early-stage plans focused on building the plumbing to safekeep tokens and handle buy and sell orders. People familiar with the effort say the bank is in the midst of choosing a technology provider to stand up that infrastructure. The menu of services is still being debated and nothing is finalized. A UniCredit spokesperson declined to comment.

The products on the table

Executives are evaluating several paths: rolling out tokenized investment products and fixed-income securities, supporting client use of stablecoins, and giving customers ways to gain exposure to cryptocurrencies. Earlier this year, UniCredit made available to its professional clientele a structured investment linked to BlackRock Inc.'s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. In the closing months of last year, the bank carried out the country's inaugural tokenized minibond using a public blockchain. In plain English, tokenization means taking traditional assets and issuing and transferring them over blockchain networks.

The bigger regulatory backdrop

European banks are getting their ducks in a row on digital assets as rules come into focus. The European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets regime has given mainstream lenders clearer guardrails, and momentum has similarly increased in the US as President Donald Trump's crypto-friendly stance has prompted banks to get more involved. So far, UniCredit has concentrated on professional investors and corporations.

What else UniCredit has set in motion

UniCredit joined a group of European banks to form Qivalis, a company set up to issue a euro-denominated stablecoin. And this week, the bank disclosed the purchase of a minority interest in VC Trade, a German lending-markets platform, to strengthen its digital capital-markets offering.
