US targets 36 entities tied to Iran's aviation network as new sanctions push sputters

Published Sep 8, 2026

Summary:
  • Washington on Tuesday hit 36 targets and added several Iranian airlines to the blacklist as part of a fresh Trump-era sanctions drive.
  • Treasury said Iran's carriers and facilitators helped move weapons, personnel, and contraband, using front companies, middlemen, and roundabout shipping lanes to grab US-made aircraft and sensitive tech.
  • Despite the splash, key partners from the Middle East to China have mostly looked away, and the US has avoided directly confronting China, which buys over 90% of Iran's oil.

What Washington just rolled out

The Treasury Department's sanctions arm, OFAC, added a set of Iranian airlines to its SDN roster and penalized 36 targets tied to Iran's aviation ecosystem. The net included firms in Turkey and the United Arab Emirates accused of backing Mahan Air, which still flies routes around the Middle East and to China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who had billed the broader pressure campaign as an "economic D-day" against Tehran, warned, "Let this be a warning to anyone doing business with Iran's remaining airlines, all of which we sanctioned today: You are at risk of being cut off from the global financial system."

How the aviation pipeline works, per Treasury

Officials say Iran leverages its aviation sector to ferry weapons, personnel, and illicit goods, leaning on shell firms, overseas go-betweens, and circuitous shipping paths to snag US origin aircraft and sensitive technology. Treasury pointed to at least three Boeing 777s that it says were recently routed through the UAE and Oman. Alongside the designations, Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network put out an alert urging banks to tread carefully with aviation activity linked to Iran, saying that network has helped Tehran source components for ballistic missiles and drones.

The wider footprint and recent steps

The latest actions follow a move last week against a small Turkish bank with roughly $34 million in capital over alleged Iran ties, allegations the bank rejected. And in late August, Treasury moved to bar the UAE branches of Egypt's second largest lender, Banque Misr, from accessing the US financial system. The companies targeted in the new round span Turkey and the UAE, reflecting the administration's focus on regional facilitators rather than Iran's biggest buyers.
