World Foundation Nets $52.5M in Token Round; Investors Locked for Year

Summary:
  • World raised $52.5 million by selling WLD tokens to institutional investors, who must hold the tokens for 12 months before selling.
  • Pantera Capital led the sale, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto.
  • Proceeds will support the World Foundation's efforts to expand its digital identity network, which has seen slow user growth and recent layoffs.

According to a Friday press release, the foundation said the lockup period shows "investors' long-term commitment to World's continued growth and utility." World Foundation, a tax-exempt limited guarantee entity registered in the Cayman Islands, receives the capital to supervise network expansion.

What World Actually Does

If you have not followed World - formerly known as Worldcoin - here is the one-sentence pitch: It helps websites and apps tell real humans apart from bots or AI.

World's core business is online verification, offering what it terms "proof of human" tools to clients. The reasoning is that with bots and artificial intelligence producing more and more online content, distinguishing real humans from automated entities will become essential. The company aims to promote its World ID, a digital credential that anonymously confirms that a real human - not a bot or AI agent - is associated with an account.

Obtaining a verified World ID - the top tier of World's verification system - requires users to undergo an eye scan by an Orb, a spherical device that transforms iris patterns into unique cryptographic codes. These Orbs are available at World's offices as well as at various partner retail locations globally.

Originally, World launched as a more explicitly crypto-focused initiative called Worldcoin - the same name as the token sold in this recent offering. Holders can buy, sell, or store the token via World's app, which functions as a custodial wallet. The firm changed its name to World amid growing public criticism of the cryptocurrency sector. In April, it rolled out an updated app and revealed collaborations with platforms like Tinder, Zoom, and Docusign.

However, World has faced difficulties expanding its user base and generating consumer interest in its vision. As a result, Tools for Humanity implemented staff reductions in June.

Challenges Ahead Despite Fresh Capital

The token sale comes at a pivotal moment for World, as it seeks to overcome adoption hurdles and regulatory scrutiny. The 12-month lockup period may provide price stability for WLD tokens while the foundation continues to develop its network. Despite partnerships with major names, the company's slow growth and recent layoffs highlight the challenges in building a global identity verification system.

Regulatory hurdles have also emerged as a significant obstacle. Data protection authorities in several European countries have launched investigations into World's iris-scanning practices, questioning whether the collection of biometric data complies with privacy laws. These concerns have slowed the company's international expansion and forced the foundation to engage with regulators to clarify its compliance posture.

Additionally, regulators in several countries have raised privacy concerns about the iris-scanning process, complicating World's expansion plans. The foundation will need to balance its ambitious rollout with compliance and public trust to attract the millions of users it envisions.
