Xpeng's Robot Arm Raises $900M as EV Forecast Misses Expectations

Summary:
  • Dogotix, Xpeng's robotics subsidiary, is raising $900 million from Alibaba, Tencent, IDG Capital, and Gaorong Ventures, valuing it at over $6 billion.
  • Xpeng's third-quarter revenue forecast of 21.7-23.4 billion yuan falls well below analyst expectations of 27.26 billion yuan.
  • Xpeng's US-listed shares fell as much as 5.9% following the earnings report, and the stock is down about 40% this year.

Xpeng is known for electric cars. But the company's future might be walking on four legs.

The Chinese automaker announced that its robot subsidiary, Dogotix, is raising a big pile of cash from some of the biggest names in tech. The news came alongside a quarterly earnings report that left investors wanting more.

A Robot Bet Worth Billions

Dogotix intends to secure $900 million from investors including Alibaba, Tencent, IDG Capital, and Gaorong Ventures. That breaks down to $600 million from outside backers, $200 million from parent company Xpeng itself, and another $100 million from senior executives.

The deal values Dogotix at more than $6 billion once it closes. And if $500 million in warrants and other options get exercised down the road, the total haul could top $1.4 billion.

That is a serious pile of money for a robotics unit. It also shows how far Xpeng wants to stretch beyond its core business of making electric vehicles. The company has been talking up robotics and even flying cars as its next act, and this fundraising gives those plans real financial fuel.

Vice Chairman and President Brian Gu said the company expects "faster mass production and commercialization of physical AI" in the coming year. Physical AI refers to machines that can move and interact with the real world, not just process data on a screen.

The Car Business Hits a Pothole

The robot news came wrapped in a mixed earnings report. Xpeng expects third-quarter revenue of 21.7 billion to 23.4 billion yuan. Analysts were looking for 27.26 billion yuan, so that range lands well below expectations.

Vehicle deliveries are also projected to come in at 115,000 to 121,000 units, which misses what analysts had penciled in. The market did not love it. Xpeng's US-listed shares fell as much as 5.9% after the numbers landed.

The stock has already had a rough year. Hong Kong shares dropped 0.9% on Monday before the announcements, and the stock is down about 40% this year.

Gu said second-quarter operations stayed resilient despite industry-wide cost pressures. That is a fair point, but investors clearly wanted to see stronger sales momentum in the months ahead.

The Bottom Line for Your Portfolio

Xpeng is making a bet that robots will matter as much as cars someday. Whether that bet pays off is the kind of thing that takes years to answer, not quarters.

For now, the company is asking investors to trust the long game while the near-term EV numbers look shaky. The fundraising gives Dogotix plenty of runway, but it also raises a question: how much of Xpeng's future value is tied to a robot business that does not make money yet?

If you own the stock, the earnings miss is the part to watch. If you do not, the Dogotix deal is a reminder that Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent are putting real money behind robotics. That is a trend worth tracking, even if the car business is hitting speed bumps right now.
