Chevron's Australia chief doesn't see LNG prices easing anytime soon

Summary:
  • LNG prices have jumped since the US-Iran war began and aren't likely to fall soon, says Chevron's Australia president.
  • Balaji Krishnamurthy told Bloomberg TV on Monday at the Gastech conference in Bangkok that "Australian LNG is at a premium now" due to Asia's proximity.
  • Chevron - the operator of the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects - has seen gains from firmer prices following lost cargoes from Qatar, which previously supplied roughly 20% of global LNG.

The six-month view from Chevron

If you were hoping your gas bill would get a breather, Chevron's Balaji Krishnamurthy is not betting on it. Speaking to Bloomberg TV on Monday, he stated, "I have a hard time seeing the prices come down" for approximately the next six months. The remarks were made at the Gastech conference in Bangkok, on the margins of the event.

Why Australian cargoes are fetching more

Krishnamurthy said "Australian LNG is at a premium now," pointing to the shorter distance to Asian buyers. Chevron has been a beneficiary of today's stronger pricing environment, a move amplified by the drop in exports from Qatar, which previously accounted for about one fifth of the world's LNG.

Demand resets now, different risks later

The price spike has already curbed some near-term demand, and Krishnamurthy flagged a longer-run risk that countries cut back usage as they hunt for alternatives to buffer against future disruptions. At the same time, he sees new engines of growth on the horizon: the rise of artificial intelligence could fuel LNG demand, with opportunities for data centers in Australia. He also noted customers are increasingly prioritizing energy security and seeking long-term supply deals.

"In the short term, we will continue to see some demand adjustments," he said. But "in the long term, the fundamentals, particularly for LNG, still remain very strong," he added.

What this could mean for your portfolio

Sticky prices, more long-term contracts, and fresh AI-linked demand all point to a market that may stay tight rather than tip into oversupply. If you have exposure to energy or industrials that ride LNG trends, watch who secures multi-year deals and who can serve Asia efficiently. That is where today's pricing power seems to live.
